Low-carbon lead reduces the carbon footprint of Clarios' battery production
When battery manufacturer Clarios chooses our Low-Carbon Lead for its European production, the carbon footprint can be reduced at an early stage of the value chain. The partnership demonstrates how responsible material choices can contribute to lower emissions while strengthening the supply of metals that are essential for the electrification of society.
As part of its sustainability efforts, Clarios, a global leader in low-voltage batteries, has chosen to use Low-Carbon Lead from Boliden in its operations across the EMEA region. For us, this partnership is an example of how producers and customers can work together to support the climate transition through conscious choices throughout the value chain.
A Lower Carbon Footprint from the Start
Our Low-Carbon Lead is produced in energy-efficient Nordic smelters that are primarily powered by fossil-free energy. The product has a cradle-to-gate carbon footprint of less than 1 kg CO₂ per kilogram of lead, significantly lower than the European average for primary lead production.
By cradle-to-gate, we mean the product's carbon footprint from raw material extraction and production up to the point where the finished metal leaves our smelter.
For many industries, emissions from raw materials and production inputs are becoming an increasingly important part of their overall carbon footprint. When metals with a lower climate impact are selected early in the process, it creates better opportunities to reduce emissions later in a product's lifecycle.
Collaboration Across the Value Chain
Our metals play an important role in the ongoing electrification of society. Lead is a key component in energy storage and is used in applications such as automotive and industrial batteries. By offering metals with a low carbon footprint, we aim to help our customers achieve their sustainability goals while supporting a more responsible and transparent value chain.
"We strive to be a leader in sustainable metal production and actively encourage our partners to join us on the journey towards a more responsible future. Clarios' decision to use Low-Carbon Lead demonstrates how responsible choices throughout the value chain can deliver immediate reductions in carbon footprint."

Part of Our Green Transition Metals Portfolio
Low-Carbon Lead is part of Green Transition Metals, our portfolio of recycled and carbon-efficient metals. By developing products with a documented low climate impact, we aim to contribute to the climate transition while providing our customers with better opportunities to understand and reduce emissions within their own value chains.
To calculate the carbon footprint of our products, we conduct life cycle assessments (LCAs) using a cradle-to-gate methodology in which all forms of credits and offsets are excluded. This provides a transparent and comparable view of emissions from the part of the value chain for which we are responsible.
