SCMentum – a new normal for concrete

A supplementary cementitious material made from residual materials – combining performance with significantly lower climate impact.

Up to 95% lower CO₂ per replaced share of cement.

Made from residual materials from metal production.

Same performance and durability as conventional concrete.

Concrete is essential – but comes with a climate cost

Concrete is a foundation of modern society. At the same time, conventional cement production accounts for roughly 8% of global CO2e emissions.

This creates a need for new, scalable materials that can reduce emissions without compromising performance.

A new way to produce concrete

SCMentum is our supplementary cementitious material (SCM), produced from residual materials generated in the production of essential metals at our smelters.

By converting what was previously considered waste into a valuable resource, SCMentum contributes to a more circular and resource-efficient construction value chain.

Lower climate impact – same performance

For every part of conventional cement replaced with SCMentum, the climate impact can be reduced by around 95%. At the same time, concrete made with SCMentum maintains the key properties required for modern construction – strength, workability and long service life.

From residual material to new value

SCMentum is produced from residual materials from smelting processes.

Instead of being landfilled, these materials are refined into a high-performance binder for concrete.
  • reduces the need for raw materials
  • contributes to lower waste volumes
  • supports a more circular use of resources

A new normal for construction

SCMentum represents a shift in how construction materials are produced and used.

It brings together two requirements that are often seen as conflicting: high performance and lower climate impact.

Our ambition is to contribute to a new normal in construction – where materials are designed with both function and sustainability in mind from the start.

Designed for real-world applications

SCMentum is developed to be integrated into existing concrete production processes.

It can replace a share of conventional cement while maintaining key performance characteristics.

Applications are being tested and validated together with industry partners to ensure consistent performance across use cases.

Transparency and standardisation

The transition to lower-emission materials requires clear data and openness.

Boliden is working together with industry partners to test, validate and standardise SCMentum for broader use.

Transparency in climate impact and material performance is essential for enabling informed decisions across the value chain.

Care and courage in the transition

Moving to lower-emission materials requires both responsibility and transparency.

At Boliden, we believe that openness about climate impact is essential for long-term trust.

SCMentum is part of this direction – offering a solution where performance is maintained while climate impact is significantly reduced.

Backed by major investments

In addition to Boliden’s own investment of SEK 1.5 billion in a demonstration plant, the Swedish Energy Agency has granted SEK 117 million through the Industrial Leap programme to support innovative and energy-efficient use of residual materials.

The Industrial Leap is a government initiative run by the Swedish Energy Agency and forms part of the EU’s Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF), which in turn is a component of Next Generation EU.
