Clarios chooses Boliden’s Low-Carbon Lead
A new partnership between Boliden and battery manufacturer Clarios highlights how material choices made early in the value chain can contribute to lower emissions further downstream. By supplying Low-Carbon Lead to Clarios’ European operations, Boliden supports a more sustainable battery production, while strengthening supply chains and circular material flows.
To support its sustainability ambitions, Clarios, a global leader in low-voltage battery solutions has entered a partnership with Boliden to source Low-Carbon Lead for battery production in EMEA.
Boliden’s Low-Carbon Lead is produced in energy-efficient Nordic smelters powered primarily by fossil-free energy. The product has a cradle-to-gate carbon footprint below 1 kg CO₂ per kilogram of lead, significantly lower than the European average for primary lead production.
The agreement demonstrates how collaboration across the value chain can help reduce emissions while ensuring access to responsibly produced metals that are essential to modern society.

To calculate product carbon footprints, Boliden conducts Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) using a cradle-to-gate methodology that excludes all forms of carbon credits and offsets.
