Large volumes of residual material from production that still contain valuable metals are stored at the Boliden Rönnskär site. Boliden has long wanted to find a way to extract more metal from residual materials while reducing the amount that has to be deposited as waste. The new leaching plant was developed specifically to handle Rönnskär’s residual materials. Lead sulfate and copper/zinc sulfate can be extracted during the process. Furthermore, the total amount of waste for disposal is reduced considerably.

Boliden Rönnskär is building a deep underground repository for process waste In the bedrock 330 meters below the plant site in Skelleftehamn. The location of the underground repository was chosen for the bedrock’s properties, and to minimize transportation. Nowhere else in the world is such a deep repository located so close to a smelter. The first tunnel was begun back in May 2015, and the underground repository now entering service consists of a 3 km long ramp and eight storage rooms accessed via a connecting corridor.
