Managing our closed mines

Since 1924, Boliden has conducted mining operations in many locations in Sweden. Today, Boliden manages 23 closed mines, from Saxberget in Dalarna to Laisvall in Norrbotten. The closed mine sites vary in size and complexity, ranging from small operations to large tailings storage facilities. Our objective is to systematically manage and create value on our closed sites in consultation with our stakeholders.

Responsible management for generations to come

We conduct regular monitoring of our closed mine sites to evaluate their environmental performance and the overall integrity of the closure design. This continuous data collection provides knowledge necessary for making informed decisions on risk mitigation activities.

Both internal and external guidelines, policies and commitments, such as the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management, guide our daily operations and help us to ensure that we work according to best practice.

Reclamation of Rävlidmyrgruvan

The reclamation project for the closed Rävlidmyrgruvan is a great example of how our continuous monitoring leads to risk based mitigative actions. The project spanned over three years in close collaboration both with the entrepreneur, Skanska, and the affected stakeholders and local community. The continuous environmental monitoring is now starting over for the Rävlidmyrgruvan site, building knowledge for future projects.
