Reclamation of the closed mine Rävlidmyrgruvan
secures natural values

To be a global leader in sustainable mining, we must consider more than the environmental impact of our active operations. Responsible restoration and management of closed mines are also essential to achieving our ambitious environmental goals. The successful remediation of the closed Rävlidmyr mine demonstrates how industrial activity can be combined with strong environmental responsibility.

All our operations require land and affect other interests in these areas – not least biodiversity. Our responsibility continues long after an operation has ended, which is why aftercare and the restoration of nature are part of our everyday work. Since each mining site has its own unique conditions, we always develop a tailored aftercare program using the methods best suited to that location.

Through the reclamation of closed mines, the risk of environmental harm from metal dispersion is reduced, while the restoration of natural values makes future use of the areas possible. The reclamation of the Rävlidmyr mine was carried out over two years in collaboration between Boliden and Skanska, and was completed in 2024. The project aimed to both reduce environmental impact and promote ecological recovery by cleaning up mining waste and ensuring its safe long-term containment.

Through the Ecolink project, two district heating networks have been connected – allowing waste heat from Boliden Rönnskär to be utilized by even more people. Cost-effective, circular, and sustainable!

Innovative solutions in collaboration with Skanska

A key reason for the project’s success was the well-functioning collaboration between Boliden and Skanska, where we jointly developed innovative solutions. These included technical measures such as dredging contaminated sediments and applying a moraine sealing layer to minimize oxygen and water inflow. This ensures that the surrounding environment will not be adversely affected in the future.

A total of nearly 100,000 cubic meters of mining waste was cleaned up and then covered to protect it from both erosion and frost. The project followed a carefully designed remediation plan, incorporating both technical and ecological measures that together can help transform the former mining area into a valuable ecosystem rich in biodiversity.

Continuous monitoring and knowledge development

When the technical remediation at the Rävlidmyr mine was completed, the project entered a new phase focused on creating valuable uses of the terrain. This may include promoting biodiversity that benefits traditional livelihoods such as reindeer herding, which is of great importance to the region.

All of our closed mine sites are continuously monitored through systematic data collection, inspection, and evaluation of environmental impact and stability. This work is carried out in close consultation with relevant stakeholders, with the goal of creating long-term value through our management of closed mines. By actively gathering new knowledge and identifying potential risks, we can continuously improve our remediation efforts. Today, Boliden manages 23 closed mines, from Saxberget in Dalarna to Laisvall in Norrbotten.
