Boliden Kevitsa

Open pit mine in one of Finland's biggest mineral deposit areas

Boliden Kevitsa in Sodankylä is one of the biggest open pit mines in Finland. The main products are nickel and copper concentrate and in addition to this also significant amounts of platinum, palladium, gold and cobolt.

The Kevitsa open-pit mine in northern Finland was acquired by Boliden in June 2016. The operation, which comprises a mine and a concentrator, went into operation in 2012. The ore concentrates are supplied to our own smelting plant in Harjavalta and Rönnskär. The Kevitsa deposit – first discovered in 1987 – is one of the largest ever mineral discoveries in Finland.

Did you know that...

in Sweden, we've been mining ore and producing metal since the 11th century? In fact, much of our prosperity is based on the income that the Falun mine and iron mining in the Bergslagen region has generated since the Middle Ages, and by mining in Västerbotten and Norrbotten over the last hundred years.

Boliden Kevitsa production, 2020

In 2020, around 9,186 ktonnes of ore were processed into metal concentrates containing nickel, copper, gold, platinum and palladium.

Complete production figures can be found in the Annual Report

The digital mine

Our mines are among the safest in the world. Because automation allows us to make workplaces that are already safe even safer for our employees, our mines are becoming increasingly digitized.

At Boliden, we are currently conducting a unique initiative to develop automation in mines. It is taking place in a cross-functional programme with employees from the entire group together with partners such as Volvo, Ericsson, Atlas Copco, Sandvik and ABB.

The goal is to keep production running non-stop round-the-clock, but the greatest gain is improved safety.
