Two world records set at the World’s Deepest Marathon
On October 25, history was made 1,120 meters below sea level in Boliden’s Garpenberg mine, where the world’s deepest marathon took place.
The event brought together 55 runners from more than 15 countries, representing leading mining companies. Boliden itself had 15 participants.

This extraordinary race was not about personal bests but about pushing boundaries and showcasing the resilience of the mining community. Two Guinness World Records were officially set: The first for the Deepest Marathon and the second for the Deepest Underground Marathon Distance Run (Team). The winner was James Mason from Glencore, but every participant walked away as a record holder.
The marathon also served as a fundraising initiative. To date, more than SEK 5 million has been raised, and donations are still ongoing.

”The organization in Garpenberg really made this a world class event that will be talked about around the world for years to come. The recognition we have now have received is of course very welcome, but in a way I knew already preparing for this race that this record will be very hard to beat in so many ways"
— Mikael Staffas, President and CEO.
