Boliden and Scanfast seal partnership
Swedish fastener company Scanfast, together with Polish nail manufacturer Herco, has entered a partnership with mining and smelting company Boliden. The collaboration means that Scanfast will use Boliden’s Low-Carbon Zinc to coat all its hot-dip galvanized nails.
“The demand for sustainable material choices is growing in the construction industry, and to meet future environmental goals, the sector faces major challenges. As a supplier, we are firmly committed to helping our customers in construction meet the stricter environmental regulations and standards expected ahead. Collaborations like this are therefore of utmost importance,” says Eric Kleveros, Marketing Manager at Scanfast.
Zinc plays a vital role as a primary raw material in the production of galvanized steel. Galvanized steel is coated with a layer of zinc, which acts as a protective barrier and effectively shields the steel from corrosion. This zinc coating enhances the durability of the steel and extends its overall lifespan. The result is a combination of steel’s strength and versatility with zinc’s corrosion resistance.
“We’re seeing increased demand for our Low-Carbon Zinc, not least because our Life Cycle Assessment gives us control over the entire value chain. Our Low-Carbon Zinc is mined in Boliden’s own mines without the use of fossil energy and then produced at our smelters in Kokkola and Odda,” says Emil Wanngren, Sales Manager Zinc at Boliden.
Boliden’s Low-Carbon Zinc emits less than 1 ton of CO₂ per ton of zinc, compared to the industry average of 3.6 tons. This gives the product one of the lowest CO₂ footprints in the world for any refined zinc.
