Zinc

An important resource for sustainable social development and infrastructure.

Versatile zinc

Zinc has a wide variety of uses, ranging from batteries to pharmaceuticals. Zinc is used mainly in galvanizing steel. By applying a thin layer of zinc to steel, you can prevent rusting for up to 100 years and extend the lifespan of steel constructions. This has a double impact as it reduces emissions of carbon dioxide while society's investments in infrastructure become more sustainable. Demand for base metals such as zinc is expected to increase in the coming years. Boliden is well-equipped to deliver these metals with a low climate footprint.

100 yrs

Boliden's zinc production

Boliden's zinc production takes place primarily at the smelters Kokkola in Finland and Odda in Norway; however, zinc is also produced at Rönnskär in Sweden. It is an energy-intensive business, so access to fossil-free energy is very important. Our main zinc mines are Garpenberg in Sweden and Tara in Ireland, and some zinc concentrate is also produced in the Boliden Area. In addition to producing zinc with raw material sourced from our own mines, we also produce zinc from recycled material at our smelters. Our zinc is produced with minimal climate impact, and we meet the high-quality requirements set by the industry where the end product is everything from cars to batteries to sunscreen.

Our statement on our product CO2 footprint

The mining industry lacks a standardized measurement method for carbon dioxide emissions - we want to change that. We believe transparency is the only way to a sustainable and long-term mining and metals industry. We make the life-cycle assessments of our main metals from cradle to gate, without counting carbon credits and offsets. It improves our possibilities to see in which scope we need to make efforts to reduce our carbon dioxide footprint. In this way, we will achieve our vision of being the world's most climate-friendly and respected metal supplier in the world.

Boliden’s climate targets

By updating the intensity targets to absolute targets for 2030, we have moved closer still to achieving our aim of being the industry benchmark.
