Raw materials
Boliden Kokkola’s main raw material is sulphuric zinc concentrate. The majority of the concentrate comes from Boliden’s own mines in Sweden and Ireland, but concentrate is also purchased from other mining companies in Europe, North America and Peru. Some of the concentrate comes from the Pyhäsalmi mine in Finland.
Excellent logistic location
There is a deep-sea port in the immediate vicinity of the zinc smelter that ensures functional transport connections for both raw materials and finished products. The access channel to the port is 13 m deep, allowing vessels of up to 60,000-70,000 tonnes to use the port all year round.
The plant is also excellently located in respect of rail transports – Kokkola is on Finland’s most important railway line – and enjoys exceptional road connections.
The majority – some 85 per cent – of the zinc produced by Boliden Kokkola is exported.
