Production Processes

Zinc production in Kokkola started in 1969. Over the years, the production processes have been improved and the capacity has increased. The smelter’s annual production capacity today is 306,000 tonnes.

Boliden Kokkola is committed to continuously and systematically improving its operations and thereby working towards a sustainable development. As a result of this improvement programme, the company is today one of the most cost-efficient and modern zinc smelters in the world. In terms of production capacity, Boliden Kokkola is the second largest in Europe and the fourth largest in the world.

The main product is Special High Grade (SHG) zinc, with a purity of at least 99.995 per cent. Zinc can also be alloyed with aluminium or other metals according to customer requirements.

Energy efficiency – an example of our improvement programme
In order to achieve the best results, Boliden Kokkola mixes different kinds of concentrate. The production process has four stages: roasting, leaching, electrowinning and casting.

Improving energy efficiency has always been one of the most important areas for development at Boliden Kokkola, because efficient energy consumption has a tangible effect on the smelter’s competitiveness and social responsibility. As a result of this development work, Boliden Kokkola is today one of the most energy-efficient zinc plants in the world.
