SAFETY BULLETIN

In ten years, Lapland`s largest multi-metal mine

The Geological research center (GTK) discovered the Kevitsa`s multimetal deposit in 1987. The Canadian mining and metals company, First Quantum Mineral, decided to build a mining in Sodankylä in 2008. Construction of the mine began in the summer 2010 and production began two years later in 2012. Since June 2016, the Kevitsa mine has been part of the Boliden Group, Europe`s leading supplier of metals.

Boliden Kevitsa has been one of the major industrial employers in Sodankylä throughout history. The mine created a lot of jobs in the area. When production started, the mine employed about 100 people. Nowadays, Kevitsa employs about 560 mining professional in a variety of jobs. Mining and supporting subcontraction have been a major role in the regional economy. The long-tem excavation of Boliden Kevitsa`s long term plan will cover more than ten years through streamlining operations and ore exploration in the vicinity, it is constantly necessary to extend the life of mine.

During the ten years of operation, the mine has been developed faster and more modern due to expansion and development projects. At the end of 2013, the Komatsu PC8000, Europe`s largest electric loader, was launched. Electric machines have increased during the mine`s operation and there are seven all electric machines. In 2020, the concentrator`s production was expanded from 7.5 million tonnes to 9.5 million tonnes. The operation of the opencast mine was transferred to production control, which further improved safety ans effiency. During 2020, Boliden Kevitsa invested in seventeen new Komatsu 830E-5 stone trucks and at the same time a fourth ferining mill was commioned at the concentrator.
