What does a geologist do?

There are lots of different types of geologist. Those working within Boliden include mine-site geologists, field geologists, mine-site project geologists, field district geologists, mine geologists, and many more besides.

In general terms, the work of mine-site geologists involves conducting geological surveys in the vicinity of existing mine projects and securing new mineral resources in our existing mines. The work of field geologists involves finding new, independent deposits in order to secure our ore base in existing concentration areas and elsewhere.

The primary duties of a mine-site or mine geologist are:

• Planning, preparing and carrying out exploration activities in cooperation with field technicians and contractors.
• Participating in planning, implementation, monitoring, data gathering, interpretation and reporting on the geological work carried out.
• Taking part in project groups working with exploration activities in conjunction with existing mine projects.
• Producing geological material for operational planning purposes.
• Processing and interpreting the results of diamond drilling.
• Gathering, evaluating and presenting data in the form of interpretations and ore calculations.
• Participating in the development of the mine's ore base.

The primary duties of a field geologist are:

• Planning and carrying out exploration work.
• Mapping the bedrock in the field.
• Mapping drill cores and rock cuttings, and interpreting and reporting back on surveys carried out.
• Leading work with contractors, geologists and technical personnel in the field.
• Following up on ongoing drilling and field work and planning future drilling work.
• Developing the geological model.

How do I become a geologist?

You study for a degree in geology at a university. You need a good written and verbal command of Swedish and English, and you should also have good computer skills and a class B driving licence.

What does a Maintenance Engineer do?

A Maintenance Engineer:

• Works with maintenance development in various ways and with projects within service and production.
• Initiates and works with method development of both remedial and preventative maintenance.
• Works with the development of follow-up systems for quality assurance.
• Provides operational support for operational and service departments.
• Is responsible, in the capacity of designated Project Manager/participant for ensuring that projects are run in a way that ensures compliance with costing, functionality and timetabling requirements etc.
• Complies with the requirements mandated by external authorities and internal management systems.

What does an Environmental Technician/Environmental Engineer do?

• Helps ensure that environmental work is conducted in accordance with applicable legislation and regulations, official dictates and the company's internal regulations and policy.
• Helps ensure that in-house checks are conducted correctly and comply with the requirements laid down by the provisions of the Swedish Environmental Code. This also applies to occupational hygiene measurements conducted in accordance with health and safety legislation.
• Conducts sampling processes to support operations and projects. Quality assures and compiles data.
• Provides operational support on matters relating to both chemical and technical issues at the plants.
• Takes part in and runs improvement projects, and takes part in and runs reclamation-related projects.
• Participates in/functions as a resource in conjunction with planning, implementation, following up and reporting back on surveys, environmental performance and development.

What does a Structural Design Engineer do?

• Coordinates structural design engineering commissions within the electrical, mechanical or media sphere.
• Helps clients to draw up descriptions of structural design engineering assignments.
• Produces relevant source data, e.g. plans and other technical documentation, for assignments and acts as a structural design engineering resource for external consultants.
• Carries out structural design engineering assignments independently.

• Internal consultant and auditor for fire and work environment issues.
• Acts in an advisory capacity on projects to ensure that they comply with relevant work environment requirements, and provides expert support in conjunction with risk analysis work.
• Participates in various "referral for consideration" projects initiated by the authorities.
• Monitors developments and provides advice in the field of equipment, gear and workwear.
• Conducts work environment training courses and measures various aspects of the work environment, such as noise, light, magnetic fields, gas, dust, etc.
• Develops case handling work with regard to the reporting of accidents, incidents and risk analyses.
• Develops and implements systematic fire safety work.

How do you become a Work Environment Engineer?

You study for a Work Environment Engineering degree or an engineering qualification from a university/college of further education, specialising in ergonomic design and production or industrial work environments, or complete a 2-year work environment engineer training course at the National Institute for Working Life/equivalent institution. What does a miner do?

The role of a miner is to produce/mine ore with the minimum possible waste rock content, given the relevant slice plans.

A miner works in the mine and his/her primary duties involve:

• Drilling, connecting, charging/firing, blasting, mucking, mechanical scaling, shotcreting, bolt drilling (i.e. reinforcing the rock).
• Laying of ventilation networks and water pipes in mine stopes and portals.
• Daily inspection of machinery and equipment.
• Notifying first line managers when one phase of work at the face has been completed and giving the go-ahead for the next activity.
• Ordering the laying out of height lines for drilling.

How do you become a miner?

You graduate from a three-year upper secondary school study course and should preferably be an experienced computer user.

What does a Research and Development Engineer do?

• An R & D Engineer carries out research and development work in partnership with operations staff at the smelter and refinery.
• He/she is part of the development organization and is the driving force behind improvement work.
• He/she ensures that the process development work based on R & D results and agreed with operations staff is implemented in production and reports back on the same.
• He/she helps with preparation work with regard to investment and expansion projects.
• He/she develops and monitors safety matters in his/her own field and is responsible for the risk analysis of process testing.
• He/she participates in development and follow-up work on environmental matters and ensures that environmental factors are addressed and understood.

What does a precious metal plant operator do?

• A precious metal plant operator is, within his/her own section, responsible for cost-efficiency, production and product quality at the precious metal plant.
• He/she is in charge of following the process instructions and of ensuring good quality process control.
• He/she is responsible for the correct scheduling and timing of his/her duties.
• He/she has an obligation to report all safety deviations, incidents and failures in the working area.
• He/she is in charge of the tidiness of the precious metal plant area.
• Operators participate in the development of precious metal processes.

How do you become a precious metal plant operator?

You graduate from upper secondary school. You acquire knowledge of the metal process on the job and also receive theoretical training in the process operations. You learn about the actual work of an operator at the refinery by working alongside other, more experienced operators.

What does a Copper/Nickel smelter tapper do?

• Opens tap holes when the melt level in the furnace is high enough.
• Shuts tap holes when the furnace is empty enough.
• He/she is in charge of clearing up for the next shift or the next tapping operation.
• Takes care of tapping tools.
• A tapper is, within his/her own section, responsible for melt level control.
• Reports all incidents in the tapping area (safety, quality, and environment).
• He/she is responsible for the tidiness of the tappers' working area.

How do you become a Copper/Nickel smelter tapper?

You graduate from upper secondary school. You acquire knowledge of the smelting process on the job, and receive theoretical training in tapping. You learn about the actual tapping process by working shifts in the smelter alongside other, more experienced tappers.

What does a smelting materials handler do?

The role of the smelting materials handler is to prepare all samples in a representative way so that the analysis samples reflect a complete delivery, by completing a number of pre-determined steps.

Smelting materials handlers in the sampling section can be divided into three different groups:

• Unloaders/weighmen carry out structuring, planning and distribution of incoming materials, plan and weigh all incoming materials, and produce a weight documentation report for the material.
• Smelters carry out small scale smelting in order to prepare additional analysis materials and act as incoming delivery checkers when handling dressed ore delivered by sea. They also carry out rough crushing of copper matte.
• Preparation staff work with crushing and fine grinding, and sift copper matte in order to make the material suitable for analysis. The preparation staff use a tried and trusted method in order to obtain a representative selection of the material, known as quartering.

The role of the smelting materials handler is to present the material in acceptable condition to every processing point, ensuing that both its size and content are correct. They also ensure that the smelter never lacks materials.

• Materials handlers take physical delivery of material from rail and sea transports. They take receipt of administrative planning details from the departmental manager and are responsible for monitoring the facility to ensure that driers, crushers and sieves are in good working order.

How do you become a smelting materials handler?

You graduate from an upper secondary school course that preferably specialises in chemistry. A class B driving licence is mandatory.

What does a process operator do?

• The process operator often works shifts, and plans, controls and monitors processes and equipment within his/her sphere of work in order to achieve the best possible production results with regard to quantity, quality and the environment.
• Is responsible for contacts and coordination within his/her own plant and other employees in adjacent areas and at other facilities.
• Checks compliance with established operating parameters to ensure that operations are conducted at a high and consistent level.
• Initiates and, in some cases, orders and/or carries out maintenance activities and minor urgent repairs.
• Carries out inspections in order to identify and action defects and faults within the facility.
• Is responsible for ensuring a satisfactory internal and external environment.
• Conducts safety checks, reports deviations and deficiencies within the installation.

How do you become a process operator?

You take an upper secondary school course specialising in technical/scientific subjects, preferably complemented with process operator training or operations technician training. You should also have basic skills in English, experience with computers and a class B driving licence.

What does a zinc plant process operator do?

The zinc plant process operators mainly work with one of the four primary processes involved in zinc production:

• Roasting. The operators transport and feed the roasting furnace with zinc concentrate to produce sulphuric acid and ash (calcine). The process is then monitored.
• Leaching. The operators monitor, check and quality control the process. The calcine (ash) is delivered from the roasting section and then dissolved in acid. The resulting solution is then refined to remove all substances apart from the zinc.
• Electrolytic refinery. The operators control and monitor the process by taking delivery of the zinc sulphate solution and converting it into zinc metal with the aid of electrolysis.
• Casting. The operators take delivery of the zinc plates from the electrolytic refineries, re-smelt the zinc together with other materials, and cast it into the desired shapes. The process involves transportation, handling, monitoring, and quality control of the smelting furnaces, the liquid metal and the casting process.

The Noralf (aluminium fluoride plant) process operators handle the sulphuric acid produced during the roasting process in the zinc plant.

• The operators monitor, quality control, check and run the process, which involves adding other substances to the sulphuric acid to form aluminium fluoride.

How do you become a process operator in the zinc plant and/or Noralf (aluminium fluoride plant)?

You study process chemistry, electrometallurgy or mechanics. You should also have good computer skills, a truck driving licence and a "crane operator" licence.

What does a Development Engineer do?

• Supports the department's operations by producing analytical methods and internal standards for the production departments.
• Participates in the day-to-day operations of the respective operating departments.
• Is responsible for supervision of certain instruments.
