The investment will total approximately SEK 1.3 billion and will strengthen Boliden's position as a world leading recycler of electronic scrap.
The biggest components of the overall investment are a Kaldo furnace, a steam boiler, gas purification equipment, and materials processing facilities. The expansion project will be carried out in 2010 and 2011 and the new Kaldo plant is expected to come on line at the end of 2011.
Volumes of electronic waste are increasing globally, but only a few smelters can process it. Boliden's Rönnskär smelter has been a technological leader in electronic scrap recycling for many years, and is now one of the world's biggest players in the field. The increased electronic scrap processing capacity boosts Rönnskär's raw materials availability, while simultaneously helping build a sustainable metals eco-cycle in which as much metal as possible is recycled, time and time again.
Extracting metals from scrap only requires 10-15 per cent of the energy required to extract metals from ore, and hence is good for both Boliden's profitability and the environment.
