A new century

In 1998 Boliden Limited acquired the Canadian mining company Westmin. The acquisition involved Boliden taking over the polymetallic underground mine Myra Falls in Canada and copper-producing properties in Chile.

In 1999 Boliden reorganised at group company level and was listed on the Stockholm Stock Exchange (secondary listing). In 2001 the Boliden group moved back to Sweden and the shares started trading on the Stockholm Stock Exchange O-list (primary listing).

At the end of 2003, Boliden acquired mining and smelting assets of the Finnish mining and smelting company Outokumpu. Two of the smelters, Kokkola and Harjavalta/Pori, are located in Finland, the third, Odda, in Norway. The acquisition includes the zinc mine Tara in Ireland. In 2004, New Boliden is created.

The Myra Falls mine and all shares in North Atlantic Natural Resources are sold in 2004.

In 2006, Boliden decides to invest SEK 5.2 billion in expanding the operation at the Aitik mine. The new facilities that will double Aitik's yearly ore production to 36 million tonnes, and increase copper production by 50 per cent by 2014, were inaugurated in 2010.

In 2010, the company decides to expand the electronic scrap recycling facility at the Rönnskär smelting plant. Once the expansion is completed, Rönnskär will be able to process 120,000 tonnes of electronic scrap per year.

A decision to carry out a major expansion of the Garpenberg mine was taken in January 2011. The ore production will be increased from 1.4 million tonnes to 2.5 million tonnes per year. The expansion will be carried out between 2011 and 2014, reaching full production capacity by the end of 2015.

Boliden is also starting up the Kankberg mine to extract gold and tellurium. Kankberg is located in the Boliden Area and will be Boliden's fifth gold mine with an expected life of mine until 2020.
